When I heard that the folks over at Tiger Nuts USA wanted me to review their product, I was really excited. First of all, I had never heard of tiger nuts before and was curious to see what they were like. And secondly, they sounded like a pretty healthy and vegan-friendly snack – something I’m always on the lookout for.
So, what exactly are tiger nuts? According to the company’s website, they’re not really nuts- they’re tubers (like a potato) that are grown in Valencia, on the eastern coast of Spain. They boast a wide range of health benefits, such as promoting heart health, boosting immunity, aiding in digestion, helping to curb cravings, as well as providing positive effects on cholesterol levels. They are high in fiber as well as many vitamins and minerals, and are gluten-free, vegan, and certified USDA organic. Also, because they are a tuber, they’re safe for people with nut allergies.
Each little tuber is naturally sun-dried and is roughly about the size of a raisin. Since they’re called “Tiger Nuts”, I was expecting something salty and crunchy. Surprisingly, these are neither, but have a really nice chewy texture that I thought was very similar to the meat of a coconut. The first thing that hits you right away is a mildly sweet taste, followed by a slightly nutty flavor not unlike an un-roasted almond. Definitely unlike anything I’ve had before.
The fact that these are high in a lot of nutrients is pretty awesome. I took some pictures of the nutrient content on the back of the bag for anyone who was curious to see. A few points of interest, for me, were the high iron (5% DV) and fiber (12%) content.
These can be pretty addicting, and even my dog begs for them, though to be honest, the flavor is a little on the mild side. I think they would really shine as a part of a trail mix or similar snack mix, where you could get the chew with some bolder flavors added in, or even a seasoned or flavored variety of Tiger Nuts would be great.
Bottom line, this is a really great snack for health-minded people, and a great gluten-free option as well. If you’re looking for something new or different to try, I would absolutely recommend them.
Thanks to the people at Tiger Nuts USA for providing me a sample of their product in exchange for an honest review!
