Who doesn’t love jam?
I know I sure do! For me, the pinnacle of late-night snacking is a fresh, good quality jam spread on homemade grain toast. Simple, crunchy, and sweet. Mmmm.
And really, what can bring you back to those happy childhood memories faster than a classic PB&J sandwich?
Sadly, all too often those store-bought jams can be a stew-pot of all things bad for you. Just take a look at the ingredient list of any of the major name brand jams and you’ll see ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, and a host of nearly-unpronounceable chemical additives and preservatives.
Not to mention that the sugar content is so high it usually burns your mouth and leaves you wondering what flavor exactly the jam is supposed to be.
That’s why I was so excited when I was asked to do a review for Maya’s Jams, a small, 100% family-owned company from New York’s Hudson Valley. Using family recipes passed down through the generations, this family trio consisting of Maya, her mother, and her grandmother, create delicious jams of healthy goodness from their organic orchard as well as other locally-sourced fruits.
All of their jams are hand-made and kettle-cooked in micro-batches to create authentically (and deliciously) home-made jams that are sure to make your mouth water, which is probably why they won an award from Great Britain’s Great Taste 2014.
And if that wasn’t awesome enough, all of their jams are vegan, gluten-free, and best of all low in sugar at only 5g per tablespoon (compare that to Smuckers -which has 12g!)
As you can imagine, it was pretty hard for me not to just dive right in there with a spoon. (Which is kind of exactly what I did anyway… 😉 ) But wow, these jams are absolutely delicious! I loved how they were not too sweet- and because of it, the honest simple flavors of the fruit really stand for themselves. To me, this is exactly how jam should taste, like you cooked it up in your own kitchen! You can tell these folks put a lot of care and effort into their product, and I was really impressed with the unique and wonderful flavor combinations that they offer:
The Blueberry Black Currant offers a lovely texture of smooth fruit puree along with some whole blueberries to add a little extra pop of flavor when you bite them- yum! The paring of blueberries with slightly-tangy black currants adds a little special pizazz that makes regular blueberry jam seem so plain-Jane.
The Spiced Raspberry Cranberry is like cranberry sauce kicked up a notch with lots of zing! I used some to make a delicious Cranberry Raspberry Butter to top off fresh lemon poppy seed muffins:
I absolutely loved the light, fresh flavors in this Pear Lemon jam, which tastes exactly like the name implies- sweet, ripe pears and bright lemon. This jam was very aromatic and had me thinking tea cakes or scones, while the classic Strawberry Rhubarb is a nod at my favorite flavors of summer, so yummy!
Here’s another look at the label. Each variety comes with some great pairing ideas:

“Here at Maya’s Jams, we pledge not never use any artificial ingredients or fruits harvested from unsustainable farming practices. Good, healthy food is the utmost importance for the family, and we would never sell anything we wouldn’t eat ourselves. That’s a promise! This means that with any of Maya’s Jams products you can be worry-free about bad ingredients or feeding your family unhealthy foods!”
